A Holy Mass scheduled for Monday, 23 February 2026, at Rubaga Cathedral has been called off under unclear circumstances.
Winnie Byanyima, wife of Dr. Kizza Besigye, stated that she was informed the postponement followed a request allegedly made by President Yoweri Museveni, asking the Church not to proceed with prayers for Dr. Besigye and other detainees.
Byanyima said she was summoned by Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere, who explained that the President would first review the intentions behind the Mass before communicating further guidance to the Church.
Despite the cancellation, a number of congregants reportedly remained at the cathedral, declining to leave even though the service did not take place.
Dr. Besigye is currently facing ongoing legal proceedings, including recent treason charges.
