Iran Warns of Retaliation as Protests Continue Despite Intensified Crackdown

Iran has warned it will respond forcefully to any US military action as protests continue across the country despite an intensified security crackdown.  Reports from hospitals and human rights organisations indicate that hundreds of demonstrators have been killed, with thousands more injured or detained over the past two weeks. Protests resumed overnight on Saturday in several cities, openly defying government restrictions. Iranian police officials confirmed that security operations have been stepped up. Human rights monitors say at least 490 protesters and dozens of security personnel have died, while more than 10,000 people have reportedly been arrested. Bobi Wine Promises Fresh By-Elections in Unopposed Constituencies

The opposition insists that upholding the rule of law requires holding new elections in regions where voters were denied a fair choice.  NUP leader Bobi Wine has pledged that under his future government, fresh by-elections will be conducted in constituencies where candidates were declared unopposed by the Electoral Commission (EC).  Wine asserts that the EC coordinated with ruling party officials — including Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, her deputy Thomas Tayebwa, Vice President Jessica Alupo, and Finance Minister Matia Kasaija — to remove opposition contenders, undermining the democratic process.  He told journalists that numerous opposition candidates were sidelined because the ruling elite feared electoral losses.  “Many people were disqualified because the government anticipated a significant defeat. In 2021, we defeated several ministers, including the Vice President; as a result, officials such as the Speaker have ensured their challengers were...

US President Donald Trump has advised Cuba to “make a deal” or face consequences , announcing an end to Venezuelan oil and financial support to the island.  The warning follows a US operation in Caracas that led to the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, who are facing charges in the United States.  Cuba, a long-time ally of Venezuela, has relied on roughly 35,000 barrels of oil per day in exchange for providing security services to Maduro’s government.  Trump said that arrangement is now over, declaring there will be no more oil or money flowing to Cuba. He accused Cuban forces of sustaining Venezuela’s leadership and claimed several Cuban nationals were killed during the operation.  Cuba has not yet officially responded as fuel shortages on the island worsen.
