Former Spain head coach Roberto Moreno is reported to have been dismissed from his most recent coaching role following concerns over an excessive reliance on artificial intelligence, including the use of ChatGPT, at the expense of basic judgment and common sense.

The 48-year-old took charge of Russian club FC Sochi in 2023. After the club was relegated from the Russian Premier League in May 2024, Moreno reportedly adjusted his coaching and planning methods during the 2024–25 First League season by increasingly relying on AI-generated programmes.
According to the club’s former sporting director, Andrei Orlov, officials became concerned as Moreno leaned heavily on the technology for decision-making. Speaking to Russian outlet Sports Russia, Orlov described one particularly unusual incident during an away trip to FC SKA-Khabarovsk in March.
Orlov alleged that Moreno used ChatGPT to design the team’s travel and training schedule and failed to override the plan when it suggested that players should go without sleep for 28 hours. The programme was reportedly followed without adjustment, raising alarm among club officials.
“When we were preparing for the trip to Khabarovsk, Robert said, ‘I have everything planned. I entered all the trip parameters into ChatGPT,’” Orlov claimed.
The former Spain head coach is now alleged to have relied more on AI-generated training and planning than on his own experience and judgment, a factor believed to have contributed to his departure from the club.
